As a child of Communism (born and raised in Prague while it was still under the heel of the Soviet boot) nothing here surprises me but it's high time the world begin to understand what lies behind the current kaffiyeh-draped fashions. Excellent piece and thank you for bringing it to our attention. The moral rot that began with Lenin's return to Moscow to ignite the Bolshevik passions and create the USSR, continues unabated, deepened and even more frantic. Blond, Nebraska born Jihadi fanatics at Columbia University - insane, yet perfectly explained by the nefarious Lenin legacy.

I still remember George Galloway hugging Saddam Hussein whom he proclaimed to be a "great leader of his people" Forward, comrades! New adventures await once we demolish the Zionist Entity (as if!)

Thank-you George. Interesting thoughts. It is very important that this article is spread far and wide, particularly among opinion formers. Please share if possible.

An incredibly detailed and informative article. The West wins the Cold War and yet is greatly losing the Ideology war. The article explains very well how they infiltrated the Third World, African Nations but I cannot understand how they could have done the same at home, here in the US and Canada. Simply to say we fell asleep really doesn't do it for me. Capitalism wins and thrives and we get Marxist teachers and professors .... how does that work? When I went to school in the Neanderthal period, we had a syllabus and a curriculum. Administration knew what was supposed to be taught and made sure that it was taught accordingly.

Yes, the youth were against the VietNam war but we didnt hate our country. For one thing, we didnt want to get drafted and wind up dead. We also objected on moral grounds, we felt the war was unjust and that it was a civil war where we did not belong. We also fought for civil rights and for women's rights, the rights of indigenous people ...... all noble and just causes.

Somehow from nobel causes we went to the insane causes ..... WOKE, DEI, Race politics, Postmodernism, White oppressor. Colonizers ..... how did all that come to be? Men saying they are women, equity over equality, denial of history. It just does not make sense to me at all.

Lastly, the last point made in the article is that America is different and we can beat this but it doesnt really lay out how or what steps need to be taken.

Thank-you Jerry. Interesting thoughts. You very clearly lay out how the American left went from supporting just causes to reheated Soviet anti-Western propaganda. It is very important that this article is spread far and wide, particularly among opinion formers. Please share if possible.

I don’t know if you are aware of New Discourses podcast (and Substack of same name) but James Lindsay has an episode called “the nature of pseudo-reality” from January 6 2021 which is absolutely amazing giving insight in exactly the “how did we get here” part, and also Gramsci and Marcuses. Strongly recommended (all his stuff is).

Daniel, I hope you don’t mind this plug here, I just thought it extremely relevant

Monica, I am a computer bonehead and I tried finding the podcast but to no avail. I did a search and did find New Discourses and then did a search for James Lindsay and there were a bunch. Frankly, I dont even know what a substack is? I just read the articles and comment. I will try looking for the podcast on utuve. thanks papa j

I still remember the adrenaline rush as I joined other Stanford students in chasing Senator Hubert Humphrey from Memorial Auditorium to his car, after his speech trying to explain why the US was in Vietnam in an action that actually parallelled the recent Korean conflict. I stopped dead with the sudden realization I was just part of a mob, which was not right.

The early 1960's were the beginning of the youthful "experimenting with drugs" (how's that working out, by the way?) and as traditional religion as "the opiate of the people" faded in appeal, the void seems to have been filled by "protest" as an energizing stimulant vocation with a wide appeal due to the infinite variety of targets of opportunity.

America (and Canada) are certainly "different" still, but far more different internally that they were. The "melting pot" theory is thoroughly discredited, there is no "amalgamation" (Google just autocompleted "Allahgamation"!!) into a new whole, rather a stew with various flavours mingling, but the original ingredients remaining largely as whole lumps.

The Japanese were confident they would win in WW2 partly because they were a racial and ethnic unity and the Americans were not. We will see.

Look at China’s pronouncements and strategies, across the Global South (the old Third World in many ways). Look at what Beijing’s doing with the Belt-and-Road Initiative (BRI). Look at the stances that it has adopted from “anti-imperialism” to “peace” to “common prosperity” and the China way, as opposed to the US way. It’s the same strategy in a new, modern garb. The echoes of the past are so evident, across its current stance in the Middle East and, indeed, right across the globe. Here are two statements from Izabella Tabarovsky’s article that show just how much the echoes reverberate today.

1. “Khrushchev’s new strategy demanded a new international posture. Moscow duly refurbished its image, discarding commitment to ideological orthodoxy and presenting itself as both a staunch advocate for peace, progress, and development and a principled opponent of imperialism, colonialism, and racism—all issues that were top of mind among newly independent nations.”

2. “What Moscow was now selling to these countries was not proletarian revolution but economic aid, offered in a brotherly spirit and supposedly with no strings attached. “We do not interfere in the internal affairs of the countries that are getting our aid,” proclaimed a Soviet official in Cairo in 1957.”

Excellent article, I’m very pleased to see you published this (also a brilliant introduction written by you by the way), it certainly helps tie loose ends at least a bit, maybe I’ll have to re-lace the thread later on :)

I admire our country's willingness to tolerate dissenting opinions (mostly), but how do people like Robert Malley rise within the system to become envoys?

Somebody (or more likely several somebodies) didn't do their jobs, or probably actively circumvented security procedures.

Remember our security services' contempt for British security over the Philby et al betrayals?

A common thread here is the incompetence of government.

But more, is the culture of the left which tolerates or even promotes people who have abhorrent beliefs.

I honestly don't understand why the majority of Jews support the left.

Stockholm Syndrome writ large.

James Coyle's avatar

After reading this article, I had the same question, so I checked out Malley's bio on Wikipedia. It appears that having had his security clearance revoked he is no longer serving as US Special Envoy to Iran. The bio is interesting, in that he apparently came up in the parallel universe of think tanks and increasingly responsible political-appointee positions in Democratic administrations. His academic background is admirable. He has not ever been a regular Foreign Service Officer, from what I have seen, so has not undergone the regular vetting that such a career would require. State has found itself in the unenviable position of trying to cover for him (and for their own lapses) when Mr. Malley's indiscretions came to light.

Steve and James, thank-you so much for engaging with the post. We have been infiltrated by those who support a bankrupt ideology both in the UK and US. Let us now work to expose the facts and raise a new generation with appreciation for our national narratives. Please spread the article if possible.

My own view is the article doesn’t take into account the political changes in America in the early 1990s. The desire to build a right wing movement to the “right” of Ronald Reagan as Pat Buchanan put it despite Reagan’s victory in the Cold War. A lot more Reaganites than are generally assumed in the aftermath of the Buchananization of the GOP ended up become part of the “left” by default in the Clinton years.

Daniel Clarke-Serret's avatar

Interesting observation Tim.

Tim Smyth's avatar

Will also point out that Buchanan was never known to be a fan of Israel and he opposed both Gulf Wars and that is before bringing up his views on World War II.

Hi Daniel - this was a really interesting articled and all new information for me. Thank you for resharing it. It's a very complex Venn diagram that seems to overlap just about everywhere! Not to mention the abundance of horseshoes. 🤯 However one thing it does explain is the recent uptick in Russian expansion into Africa via Wagner group. They are peddling this recycled nonsense to third world countries who have nothing to lose, assisting in coups, providing arms, money and very little else in the way off actually helping the desperate civilian populations of these countries. Resources and geographic dominance are the order of the day. Mali and Burkina Faso come to mind as more recent examples of this. Reading this article helps to explain why the increase in activity in these countries and regions which is being largely ignored by the western media.

Daniel Clarke-Serret's avatar

No matter how little Russia offers the world in terms of development and human flourishing, it is the itch that just won’t go away. Unfortunately!

An outstanding article by Izabella Tbaraovsky from The Tablet! Thank you for reprinting it Daniel! This article is rich with historical facts that up until recently, has been lost to time. This is the story of how the USSR, the Arab countries and their liberal and leftist allies in the United States made the distorted picture of Israel as a colonial aggressor mainstream. I was not aware of the extensive ties of George Galloway and the Malleys to the Soviet Union and the PLO respectively. But I am not surprised in the least. The Soviets knew it would help to delegitimize Israel in the eyes of the international community and would engender animosity towards the nation state of the Jewish people in the third world and on western college campuses. Indeed, the Soviet strategy succeeded and sadly still continues on today, with Fatah, Hamas and Iran picking up where the Russians left off. When Pro-Palestinian and Antizionist protesters give their reasoning for their stance and why they are in the streets protesting they have no idea they are often repeating talking points that come from Soviet propaganda. This is an article every westerner MUST read and it should be required reading in every school across the country! The USSR never gave a s*** about third world struggles for liberation. They were merely pawns for them in the great game of the Cold War and the struggle against the evil United States, the evil West, decadent capitalism, and corrupt liberal democracy. But they only supported them as it was in their national interest to do so. Neither were they free from being guilty of colonialism, imperialism and racism. How about their control over Ukraine & Belarus? How about their conquest of Eastern Poland and the Baltic States during WWII? We’re their 1939 invasion of Finland and 1979 invasion of Afghanistan not acts of imperialism? Not to mention the numerous ethnic groups they expelled and their crackdowns on dissent in East Germany, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Their “white man’s burden” sort of attitude towards the peoples of Central Asia and the Caucuses is applicable here too. Did ethnic minorities in Russia ever rise very high in the Politburo? Was there ever a Ukrainian, Belarusian, Crimean Tatar, Cossack, or Asian Premier of the USSR? Nope. They were discriminated against and never allowed to rise as high as ethnic Russians could. Talk about rank hypocrisy! Also, don’t forget the USSR signed a Non-Aggression Pact with Nazi Germany in 1939 and never stopped trading with Apartheid South Africa to the day they collapsed. Champions of third world liberation, anti colonialism and anti-racism my foot! Don’t even get me started on the rampant antisemitism of the USSR and their abominable treatment of Soviet Jewry especially the Refusniks! I would also point out the USSR was pretty brutal towards LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, Muslims, and Christians. In addition, discrimination against women was pretty common despite the Soviet’s talk of equality for everyone.

Daniel Clarke-Serret's avatar

Thank-you so much for the detailed response Noah. The discrimination of the Soviets towards their own minorities tells you all you need to know about their commitment to anti-racism. As you say this article is required reading for all. Please share!

Thanks for this Claire, as it fills in the details of what I had slowly come to suspect about the current Left ability to ignore history, instantly change direction and the relentless projection of moral depravity on any chosen political target.

Acquaintances have described the appeal of Marxism as the simplicity of the "us and them", "oppressor and oppressed" bipolar world, no thinking required with the categories presorted by your chosen influencers. I note the decline of the reasoned essay, "compare and contrast" assignments replaced with "guess the right answer" multiple choice tests and cheat sheets to explain current student enthusiasm for fashionable causes. Faced with complex or incomprehensible situations, the default to

assuming your own values are shared by others is a fatal hubris, the "peculiar Western aberration to believe that 'under their skin' all other peoples think as we do" as Thomas Sowell put it. Perhaps it is just fear for ourselves that causes the denial of what Putin, Khamenei, Nasrallah, Hamas etc say out loud. "They couldn't possibly mean that, could they?", though their actions say so loudly.

The virulent Jew hatred which seems to have spontaneously appeared, is just the standard application of Alinsky's practical and effective, 1971 "Rules for Radicals" #12 being kicked up a notch from targeting individuals to an identifiable group.

"Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)"

As a former Soviet Jewish refugee, escaping the antisemitic state apparatus and anti-Zionist Soviet propaganda to find it flourishing in this US and the West is …ironic, to say the least. Of course, the antisemitism in the West was simply dormant, and the seeds of the Soviet propagandistic efforts put roots in a well nourished soil.

What an excellent and thorough article. An invaluable analysis. For brainwashed the process may be irreversible, but for those with open minds, if any are left, it is a must read. Thank you fur publishing it.

I am struck by how the conspiracy theory that gives rise to Jew hatred has engendered true international conspiracy against Jews, based on shoddy scholarship and lies.

I would say, how can you fight this, the world has never been so globally linked so this campaign against Jews has never been so international and so ubiquitous. All I can say is, we've always come through. I think we always will.

But damn, how do you get on the mailing list of the International Jewish Conspiracy? Asking for a friend.
