Chapter 12: The Non-Negotiable Nation

Peace is not the human default. It is an achievement, fragile, defended, never self-maintaining. Jews learned that the hard way. Israel lives it by necessity.

On the morning of October 7, 2023, that truth ripped through our sleep—both literal and metaphorical. At first light, hundreds of Hamas gunmen blew gaps in the fence around Gaza and poured into Israel. They turned kibbutzim and border towns into slaughter sites, burned houses, hunted families, dragged children and grandmothers from safe rooms. They gunned down hundreds of people at a music festival. The dead, the abducted, the footage streamed in real time. President Joe Biden called it “the worst massacre of the Jewish People since the Holocaust,” and he was right.

The shock had two edges. The first was the savagery. The second was the realization that a lapse in vigilance had opened the door.

Warnings were missed or waved away. The perimeter we had come to take for granted was thin. The lesson, old as Jewish history, reasserted itself in blood. Peace exists because people keep watch. When those who keep watch fail or are told to stand down, evil moves fast.

The habit of watchfulness runs deep. In our oldest text, the Holy One is called the “Guardian of Israel” who “neither slumbers nor sleeps.” A people that hears those words learns to keep its eyes open. In the long centuries without a state, Jews did what they could to protect their communities, but they were always at the mercy of others—unfortunately, often to their detriment. With the return to Zion, watchfulness had to become a civic duty.

By the late nineteenth century, a Hebrew farmer in the Galilee or the sands south of Yafo learned quickly that ploughing by day meant patrolling by night. At first, some hired local guards. When that proved unreliable, they formed their own watches. In 1907, a handful of young men led by Israel Shochat organized Bar-Giora, a secret band with a grim motto: “In blood and fire Judea fell; in blood and fire Judea shall rise.”

Two years later they founded HaShomer, the Watchman, to protect Jewish farms across the land. They rode out in twos, in rain and heat, circling fences, sleeping with rifles by the door.

That posture carried into the institutions of state. The underground defense organization formed in 1920 called itself the HaGanah, “Defense.” It did not wait for the British to show up in time.

When Israel declared independence in 1948, the HaGanah became the Israel Defense Forces. The name clearly shows this was not an army of conquest. It was a shield. The day after the Declaration, Arab armies invaded. The question was simple, and it was not theoretical. Fight, or die.

Keeping watch is not only a matter of sandbags and sentries. It is a culture. In Israel, memory is not for museums. On Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Remembrance Day, sirens howl across the country. Traffic halts. People step out of cars and stand, heads bowed, on highways and sidewalks.

A week later, on the Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers, the sirens sound again. These are not displays for tourists. They are a public lesson plan. A twelve-year-old on a Tel Aviv balcony watches his parents stiffen in silence. He understands that his life rests on someone’s readiness to serve. A teenager in Jerusalem hears the same siren and knows it may one day be hers.

There is a line that runs from the watch-fires on a hillside in 1910 to the drones over Sderot in 2023. It is the line of a people that will not leave its safety to others. Zionism made that a norm. Ze’ev Jabotinsky, who organized Jewish self-defense after the Kishinev pogrom of 1903, called it dignity. David Ben-Gurion boiled it down to the “three S’s”: self-help, self-rule, self-respect.

After Rome’s expulsions and Europe’s pogroms and the Germans’ gas, these were the price to breathe.

It is fashionable in safe capitals to intone that “security can’t be an excuse.” In Israel, security is the boundary between neighbors and mourners.

Watchfulness does not mean cruelty. Israel’s army is called what it is for a reason. The goal is not to dominate others. It is to preserve a space where Jews can live as a free people and where Arabs who share that goal can live in peace.

The insistence on maintaining control in parts of Judea and Samaria until there is a serious peace is not a theological tic. It is a sober reading of experience.

We left Gaza in 2005 and were told to wait for the dividends. The dividends arrived as Qassams. We offered a state in 2000 and 2001; the answer was “no,” then suicide bombings. That is not a script that argues for standing down.

Those who seek to undo Israel know they cannot defeat its soldiers in the field. They wage a different war. They use vocabulary as a battering ram. Call Jews in Judea “settlers,” call their neighbors “indigenous,” and you have smuggled a verdict into the grammar. Say “occupation” without context and you have implied an original theft. Repeat it often and the history under your feet disappears.

Do not play along. The moral and legal case has been made in these pages. The rights of both peoples must be reconciled by agreement. But a precondition of any agreement is a shared language that does not start with a lie.

There is a kind of dry Israeli humor that makes sense only in a place that lives on a knife-edge. A farmer in the 1930s, asked why he slept with a rifle under the bed, shrugged and said, “The roosters crow. The jackals prowl. I prefer to be awake.” That ethos rightfully permeates Israeli culture. Pray for rain and dig a reservoir while developing desalination technology. Teach your children poetry and teach them to shoot. Hope for calm and check the fence.

The world often mistakes that posture for belligerence. In truth it is the posture of a people that has read its own history and decided not to repeat it. Israel’s insistence on its right to exist, to defend itself, to plant vineyards in Judea and teach Hebrew in Jerusalem, is not a demand for special treatment.

The paratroopers who put their hands on the Wall in 1967 did not think of charters or maps. They thought of fathers and grandfathers, of prayers whispered in cellars and camps, of a city that carried their name. They cried because they had come home and because they knew, in their bones, that coming home comes with work. To keep a home, you lock the doors, you fix the roof, you get up when the dog barks at 3 a.m. That work will never end. It does not have to. It is the price of living as a nation rather than pleading as a remnant.

The world is not owed an apology for this. In a century that tries to dissolve facts into slogans, we say: some things are not for barter. The Jewish People’s place in the land where they became a people is not a negotiating chip. It is the floor on which any real peace must be built.

Chapter 11: Sovereignty is Not Theft

June 1967. Jerusalem still smelled of gunpowder when Israeli paratroopers pressed their palms to the stones of the Western Wall—exhausted and weeping. They had fought their way through fire to touch the last remnant of the Temple their ancestors built. For the first time in two thousand years, Jews walked freely through the Old City—not as pilgrims or supplicants, but as its guardians. One recited the Shehecheyanu prayer of gratitude; another murmured a psalm. The moment was history folding back on itself.

Yet while those young men were kissing the Wall, another campaign had already begun far from Jerusalem. In Cairo, Damascus, and Moscow, the war’s defeated architects were drafting a new narrative. Their armies had failed to destroy Israel, so they would try to delegitimize it. Their newest weapon was a single word: occupation.

That word was never neutral. It was designed to turn victory into sin—to recast the Jews not as a people restored to their capital but as intruders in it. Overnight, the liberators of Jerusalem became “occupiers.” David was rebranded as Goliath. The term entered Western discourse like a Trojan horse, carrying inside it a false premise: that Jews could be foreigners in Judea.

But you cannot occupy your own house. You cannot be an invader in the city that bears your name.

The Six-Day War was not planned as expansion but as survival. Israel faced encirclement. Egypt closed the Straits of Tiran, Syria shelled northern villages, and Arab leaders promised annihilation. “Our basic aim is the destruction of Israel,” declared Egypt’s Nasser. When Israel struck preemptively on June 5, it fought for existence—and won. In less than a week it captured the Sinai Peninsula, the Golan Heights, Gaza, and, most fatefully, the biblical heartlands of Judea and Samaria, which Jordan had seized in 1948.

For Israel, the outcome was defensive victory; for the Arab world, it was well-earned humiliation. Within months, Arab leaders gathered in Khartoum and issued their now-famous “three noes”: no peace, no recognition, no negotiations. Having failed to destroy Israel by arms (though they would try again and again), they sought to undermine it by language. The battlefield moved from the Sinai sands to the halls of the United Nations.

The Palestine Liberation Organization had existed since 1964—three years before Israel controlled a single inch of Judea, Samaria, or Gaza. Its original charter made no claim to those territories because they were under Arab control: Jordan in the west, Egypt in the south. The PLO’s goal was not liberation of those lands but the eradication of Israel and her Jews within its pre-1967 borders. “Palestine,” in the Arab lexicon of that era, meant Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem—not Nablus or Gaza City.

Only after Israel’s 1967 victory did the word occupation appear. Suddenly, areas that had never been considered a “Palestinian state” became sacred territory whose “liberation” justified perpetual war. The irony is glaring.

Under Jordanian rule, no-one demanded an independent Palestine. Under Israeli rule, the same towns became the alleged cradle of Palestinian nationhood. The timing exposes the truth: occupation was about sovereignty—specifically about denying Jewish sovereignty.

The UN Security Council’s Resolution 242, adopted in November 1967, was drafted to outline the terms of peace. Its English version calls for “withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict”—not all the territories, and not the territories. The omission was deliberate. Lord Caradon, Britain’s UN ambassador who wrote the text, later confirmed that the language allowed for secure, negotiated borders, not a wholesale retreat to the vulnerable armistice lines of 1949.

President Lyndon Johnson agreed. “An immediate return to the situation of June 4,” he said, “is not a prescription for peace.” Yet Arab diplomats and Soviet propagandists quickly mistranslated the resolution into French—adding the word des to territoires occupés (“the territories”)—and then cited that mistranslation as proof that Israel was legally bound to withdraw from everywhere. A linguistic trick became a diplomatic cudgel.

The formula “land for peace” morphed into “land first, maybe peace later.” In every retelling, Israel was cast as the violator of law, while the aggressors of 1967 rebranded themselves as victims of “occupation.” The world forgot that the territories in question had been taken from Jordan and Egypt—countries that had attacked Israel. There had been no sovereign Palestinian state, no Palestinian borders to occupy.

In English, the word occupation evokes foreign boots on native soil—Nazi troops in France, Soviet tanks in Hungary. It implies trespass. That is why it was chosen. Arab propagandists and their Soviet patrons understood the psychological power of language. Call Israel an occupier often enough, and people will forget who the natives are.

Of course, the Jews take their very name from Judea—the land now labeled “occupied.” Every town and ridge in those hills carries a Hebrew name from Scripture. Bethlehem, Shiloh, Hebron, Bethel—these are not colonial outposts but the setting of the Jewish Bible. To call Jews occupiers there is like calling Greeks occupiers in Sparta or Navajo occupiers in Arizona. It is linguistic vandalism used to justify political aggression.

If Jews are “occupiers,” what exactly are they occupying? The territories captured in 1967 were not taken from a Palestinian sovereign. Jordan’s annexation of Judea and Samaria in 1950 had been recognized by only two countries: Britain and Pakistan. Egypt never claimed Gaza as its own. When Israel gained control of these lands in a defensive war, it assumed legal responsibility for disputed, not foreign, territory.

And beyond law, there is history. These are the hills of King David, the burial caves of the patriarchs and matriarchs, the vineyards of Samaria. The charge of “occupation” erases both the archaeology underfoot and the ancestry that named it. It asks the world to believe that the descendants of the builders of Jerusalem are trespassers in Jerusalem.

The Six-Day War did not create a new moral problem; it exposed an old one. The Arab world still could not accept Jewish sovereignty anywhere, in any borders. “Occupation” became a fig leaf for that rejection. It allowed those who lost a war of aggression to pretend they were fighting for liberation. It let the Soviet Union clothe its anti-Western politics in anti-colonial rhetoric. It gave Western liberals an easy moral cause that cost them nothing.

But facts are stubborn. The Jews who cried at the Wall in 1967 were not conquerors. They were sons returning to their father’s house. The same paratrooper who whispered a prayer there could walk a few blocks and read his own ancestor’s name on an ancient tomb. That is not occupation. That is homecoming.

Judea and Samaria: History in Brief

Call it what it is. The ridge today branded “West Bank” is Judea and Samaria. It is the spine of the country and the cradle of the Jewish People. Hebron, where Abraham bought a burial cave with minted silver. Bethel, where Jacob dreamed of a ladder. Shiloh, where the Ark rested before Jerusalem. These are not sermon topics. We dig them from the soil. Walk the stones of ancient synagogues in the Etzion hills or the stepped winepresses in Samaria and you are walking the Hebrew Bible in the present tense.

Rome might have broken the kingdom but it could never sever the link. After 70 CE and again after 135 CE, the empire scattered crowds and renamed the province to humiliate the natives. Some managed to stay. Others returned in pulses. Through Byzantine, Arab, Crusader, Mamluk, and Ottoman rule, Jewish communities kept a foothold—Jerusalem first, then Safed and Tiberias, then Hebron again. By the mid-nineteenth century Jews were the largest community in Jerusalem, as travelers and consuls recorded in their own matter-of-fact reports. In the highlands, devout families held small courts near the graves of the patriarchs and matriarchs. Hebron’s Jews, Sephardi by tradition and later joined by Ashkenazim, traced their line back centuries.

That line was cut in 1929. A mob, inflamed by lies about the Temple Mount, rampaged through Hebron. Sixty-seven Jews were butchered. Homes were sacked. Scrolls were slashed. A few Arabs hid their Jewish neighbors and saved lives—credit where it is due. The British, unwilling to secure the city, removed the survivors “for their own safety.” Hebron, the City of the Patriarchs, was cleared of Jews. In 1929.

The pattern widened in the 1936–39 Arab revolt. Jews were driven from mixed towns, including Gaza, where a small Jewish community had lived and prayed.

Then came 1947–48. Arab leaders rejected partition, opened fire, and wherever their forces prevailed, Jewish life was erased. When the armistice lines were drawn in 1949, Jordan held Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem. Egypt held Gaza. Every Jew in those areas—roughly ten thousand people—was dead, expelled, or a hostage exchanged. The Jewish Quarter of the Old City lay in rubble. Synagogues were blown up or turned into stables. Jews were barred from the Western Wall and from the Mount of Olives. Jordan annexed the territory in 1950. Almost no-one recognized the move. Even the Arab League kept its distance.

Take the term the world prefers: occupation. If it means holding land by force without sovereign title, that was Jordan in Judea and Samaria from 1949 to 1967. Britain and Pakistan offered recognition—no one else did. During those nineteen years there was no Palestinian state in Judea and Samaria, no international drumbeat for one, and the PLO’s 1964 charter pointedly disclaimed sovereignty there while those hills were under Arab rule. The project in those years, as it is now, was not self-determination. It was the removal of the Jews.

June 1967 changed the facts on the ground, not the facts of history. Israel, facing annihilation, fought and won. Gaza came out of Egyptian control. The Golan came out of Syrian control. And Judea and Samaria came out of Jordanian control. The gates of places Jews had been barred from for (just) nineteen years swung open (once again). Rachel’s Tomb. Hebron’s Cave of the Patriarchs. Joseph’s Tomb. The Western Wall. No-one said, “We have occupied foreign land.” They said, “We have returned home.”

Chapter 10: The Jewish Right to Return

Tel Aviv, May 1948. In a crowded hall on Rothschild Boulevard, David Ben-Gurion read Israel’s Declaration of Independence. The audience rose and sang “Hatikva.” No one in that room thought they were inventing a country. They understood they were restoring one. Ben-Gurion said it plainly in the text he held: the Jewish People were exercising a natural and historic right to sovereignty in their land. The world’s recognition mattered, but it was not the source. The source was older than London and New York combined.

The Jewish story on that soil begins far earlier than 1948, 1917 or 70 CE. Israelite kingdoms stood in Judea with Jerusalem as capital. The record is not only scriptural. It is carved in stone, minted on coins, mapped in Roman and Greek accounts. After Rome destroyed the Second Temple and crushed the Bar Kokhba revolt, the empire tried to erase the name of Judea and renamed the province Syria Palaestina. The trick failed. A remnant remained in the land. Others kept coming back. Pilgrims founded synagogues. Families rebuilt streets and courts. The thread never snapped.

The diaspora carried the country in daily life. Jews faced Jerusalem three times a day. They ended the Seder with “Next year in Jerusalem.” Brides and grooms broke a glass to mark what was missing. These were not poetic flourishes. They were instructions. Communities in Sana’a, Fez, Kraków, and Vilna taught the same lesson in the same words for centuries: exile is a condition, not a destiny. When conditions allowed, Jews acted on that lesson.

The continuity was cultural as well as civic. The Hebrew language did not vanish. It lived in prayer and law until it lived in markets and streets again. Medieval poets like Yehuda Halevi wrote of Zion as home, not symbol. That is unusual in human history. Nations in exile tend to dissolve. The Jews refused. They preserved a common ancestry, a continuous tie to a specific land, and a distinct language and law that pointed to that land. Modern criteria for indigenous status list those elements. The Jewish People meet them all.

Calling Jews “colonizers” in Judea is an inversion. The Arab presence in that land begins with seventh-century conquest, long after Jews built states there. Even blunt observers outside our argument have said so. A Pakistani-Canadian columnist once noted that Jews had lived around Jerusalem for more than a millennium before Arabic ruled the streets. He added that when Umar’s armies came, they occupied an already peopled country. That is not a controversial statement. It is a matter of record.

None of this depends on faith. One can read the covenant as theology and still see the history beneath it. Coins from the Bar Kokhba years read “For the freedom of Israel.” Pilgrims’ inscriptions speak of Judean towns by name. Ottoman firmans refer to Jewish neighborhoods by their ancient titles. Nineteenth-century lists of Jerusalem’s residents count Jews as the largest group. Twentieth-century aliyot, long before statehood, rebuilt farms and towns with Hebrew names that matched the map of Tanakh. Continuity and return, not invention.

When Ben-Gurion read the Declaration, he did not beg for a favor. He asserted a right. The Allied decisions at San Remo, the Mandate’s language about “reconstituting” the national home, and the partition vote of 1947 affirmed what already existed. They did not create Jewish belonging. They recognized it. When Israel took its place among nations, it did so with the consent of history and the consent of law. Both mattered. Neither was charity.

Well that’s precisely the falsehood merry-go-round that pertains in the “human rights community” especially as it relates to Israel. The BBC quotes the ICC who quotes the UN special rapporteur in turn. Albanese then cites a “respected NGO” who cites a human rights lawyer who references a “Palestinian non-violence campaigner” who works for Hamas or PFLP in the evening. The laundering of citations makes the claim look unimpeachable, when in fact it is built on a house of cards. It’s a lie spread by Anti-Western terrorists.

This cycle of falsehood is repeated unceasingly and unapologetically, not because the actors are short of a brain cell, but rather because they form part of a sect: Uri’s aptly named “Campus Catechism”.

Rooted Truth is possibly the clearest exposition of this theorem ever penned. It exposes the entire “human rights” lie and worse than that, it undermines the entire foundation of the university citation system. Read it. Spread it. CITE IT!

Chapter 9: NGO Lawfare

Summer 2014. Fighting in Gaza is underway. A single figure ricochets around the world: “69 percent of those killed were civilians.” A United Nations brief cites more than 2,100 Palestinian fatalities and repeats the claim that nearly three quarters were noncombatants. Major outlets print it as settled fact. The source is the Gaza Health Ministry, run by Hamas, a combatant that lists its own gunmen as “civilians” and counts no distinction between a rifleman and a bystander. In one news cycle, Israel’s war of self-defense is reframed as a massacre. Courts have not sat. Evidence is still being gathered. The verdict in global opinion is already signed: war crimes.

You know the pattern. Rockets slam into Israeli towns. Israel strikes back at launch crews and command posts. Within hours, a chorus of NGOs and UN offices floods the field with “assessments,” casualty spreadsheets, emergency resolutions, legal condemnations. The battlefield is only half the fight. The improvised courtroom—pressrooms, human-rights panels, donor conferences—becomes the other front.

The loudest numbers came from a Hamas ministry and were amplified by groups that rarely ask who died doing what. When later checks by Israelis and independent analysts identified large shares of combatants among the dead—men of fighting age, named militants, operatives confirmed by their own factions—the headlines did not correct. The myth of “mostly civilians” had set like concrete. The truth—that Hamas hid behind families, staged attacks in alleys and schools, and laundered the body count—trailed far behind.

Over decades, non-governmental organizations claiming to speak for “human rights” have turned international law into a weapon aimed at the world’s only Jewish state. Reports are fired like rockets. Casualty tables are massaged to indict Israel in the court of public opinion. Legal trigger words—war crimes, apartheid, genocide—are deployed with strategic precision, stripped of context and intent. Meanwhile Hamas, Hezbollah, and their state patrons sit in the gallery, delighted to see a democracy dragged before tribunals while the authors of the carnage dodge the dock.

The method is simple. Start with a narrative minted in a seminar—Israel as “settler-colonial,” “apartheid,” “genocidal.” Feed it to a friendly clinic, dress it in footnotes, publish it as a study. Pass it to an NGO with a letterhead. Hold a press conference. Secure a quote from a UN special rapporteur already on record as an activist. By the time a rocket is recovered from a schoolyard or a dead fighter is named by his own brigade, the story has moved on. The accusation has done its work.

This is the machinery of denial at scale. It does not rely on tanks. It runs on grant cycles, press lists, and the reflexive deference many journalists and diplomats still grant anything stamped “human rights.” It is purposeful. It is well funded. It is utterly cynical.

The same slogans from campus—“apartheid,” “genocide,” “colonizer”—now appear in glossy dossiers and “urgent appeals.” The passage from quad to quorum is not accidental. NGOs translate chants into charges. They turn activist framing into “findings.” They give the academy’s dogma a patina of neutrality, then wheel it into Geneva and The Hague.

The NGO barrage did not materialize by itself. It was built, financed, and franchised. In the 1990s—Oslo’s glow and the global boom of “civil society”—a dense archipelago of organizations appeared to monitor, educate, and litigate around Israel.

EXTRACT: “The answer to indoctrination is not censorship. It is sunlight. Let students watch a pro-Israel scholar and a sharp “pro-Palestinian” advocate test claims in the same room. Offer courses that present Israel’s legal and historical case alongside Arab narratives, not instead of them. Grade arguments, not identities. The pendulum can swing back. It must. Leave this unchecked and the damage will not stop with the Jews. It will hollow out the integrity of knowledge itself and corrode the habits that sustain a liberal civilization: reason, evidence, the dignity of the individual.

Universities are the right place to ask hard questions. What does indigenous belonging mean on land sacred to more than one people? How do two nations reconcile overlapping claims without erasing either? What has Israel’s messy democracy gotten right under fire, and where has it failed? You cannot even begin to answer if one conclusion is assigned in advance and dissenters are shamed into silence. The fight to reclaim intellectual goes beyond Israel—it’s part of a larger struggle against reducing every human conflict to a cartoon of oppressor and oppressed.”

Chapter 8: Campus Catechism

October 2023. Cambridge. Sirens still wail in Israel. Families are burying their dead. Within hours, thirty-four Harvard student organizations release a statement that holds “the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.” The letter spreads faster than the facts. Donors revolt. A truck circles Harvard Yard with the names of student signatories. The yard itself stays quiet. The script has been written elsewhere.

Ithaca. On the Arts Quad at Cornell, a history professor steps to a microphone. He calls the Hamas onslaught “exhilarating” and “energizing.” He smiles as he says it. Students cheer. Faculty defend his “context.”

New York City. At Cooper Union, Jewish undergraduates shelter in a library as a crowd pounds on the glass. Security locks the doors. The students wait it out in silence. Upstairs, a dean issues a sterile memo about free expression.

Across campuses, a graphic promoting a “Day of Resistance” circulates. The silhouette on the poster is a paraglider—everyone knows why. Hamas gunmen used powered paragliders to descend on a music festival and hunt civilians. The image is presented as joy.

The pattern repeats. At Columbia, encampments demand “liberation from the river to the sea.” At Stanford, masked students march and chant for “intifada.” At UCLA, a kiosk hands out flyers calling October 7 a “legitimate military action.” In Philadelphia and Ann Arbor, rallies celebrate “victory.” The facts from Israel are still being counted. The catechism is not waiting.

Welcome to the new orthodoxy. It did not appear overnight. It was taught. In reading lists and teach-ins. In student government resolutions and “divestment” workshops. In departments that describe Israel as a settler colony and Jews as white Europeans. The labels are fixed before the class begins. Colonizer. Apartheid. Genocidal. These are not hypotheses to test. They are articles of faith to recite.

Dissent is treated as heresy. A Zionist student stands to speak and is booed. A visiting Israeli scholar is shouted down. A flyer for a dialogue event is ripped from a wall. Administrators invoke free speech for one side and “safety concerns” for the other. A double standard is enforced by etiquette.

Consider the machinery that delivers the creed. “Israeli Apartheid Week” began at the University of Toronto in 2004–05 and now runs on dozens of campuses across North America, Europe, and beyond. Mock walls go up. Checkpoints are staged. Panels repeat a script that ignores Israeli Arab citizenship, Knesset seats, court rulings, and coalitions that include Arab parties. The event is not a seminar. It is a sermon.

The lexicon is intentional. “Settler-colonial state” is borrowed from courses on Algeria and Kenya and pasted onto Israel. The framing erases three thousand years of Jewish rootedness and the fact that half of Israel’s Jews are Mizrahi refugees from Arab and Persian lands. The word “apartheid” is ripped from South Africa and applied to a country where Arab citizens vote and serve as judges. The word “genocide” is hurled at a people whose grandparents have numbers on their arms. Shock, rather than precision, is the goal.

The catechism travels on a closed loop, as we have been exploring. NGOs and UN bodies mint accusations and publish “findings.” Faculty assign them as authoritative readings. Students chant them at rallies. Reporters quote the chants back as proof of a trend. The same claims return to the UN as “civil society input.” The loop tightens like a noose until it feels like common sense.

And so a Harvard coalition can call Israel “the apartheid regime” even while videos show babies carried from burning homes. A Cornell professor can praise a pogrom as “exhilarating” and still be defended as a truth teller. A campus brochure can exalt a paraglider and call it resistance.

The stakes aren’t academic though. The catechism trains a generation that will staff NGOs, editorial boards, law firms, and foreign ministries. What begins on a quad ends in a courtroom brief. A chant becomes a policy memo. A mock wall becomes a real wall in a UN report. To understand that pipeline, we have to map the course materials, the funding streams, and the professional groups that certify the creed as knowledge.

Why call it a catechism? Because it supplies pre-packaged answers to complex questions and punishes deviation. It reduces a conflict of history, law, religion, language, and competing nations to a single moral binary. “Palestinians” are pure victims. Israelis, and by extension most Jews, are racial oppressors. Facts that do not serve that story are discarded. Stories that do are amplified.

The university should be a place for argument. It has, in too many corners, become a place for ritual. That ritual didn’t emerge from thin air.

Doctrines With Tenure

To trace its roots, travel back to the late 20th century, when revolutionary ideas about power, race, and empire burst into Western academia. In the vanguard was Edward Said, the literary scholar who became a celebrity intellectual. With Orientalism (1978), Said argued that Western scholars’ depictions of “the East” (including Arabs and Muslims) were inherently biased, serving imperialist domination.

Though his critique was aimed at 19th-century novels and French colonial administrators, Said’s influence on Middle Eastern studies was seismic. He essentially told a generation of academics that to side with Western narratives was to be complicit in oppression; the proper stance was to champion the “subaltern,” the colonized, the oppressed voice.

Soon after Orientalism, Said published The Question of Palestine (1979), positioning the Palestinian struggle as the archetypal anticolonial fight of the age. He explicitly framed Zionism as European colonialism in disguise. Many a grad student took note. Here was a thrilling inversion: the Jews, fresh from surviving genocide, were cast not as victims or survivors, but as powerful colonials; the Palestinians, despite alliances with surrounding Arab states, became the ultimate downtrodden natives.

Chapter 7: The UN Assembly Line

Late fall in New York. The gavel drops, the lights rise, and the choreography begins. Delegates sit beneath the giant gold seal. A representative of a police state condemns Israel with practiced indignation. The votes flash green. Another resolution passes. In the same session, mass graves in Syria and prison camps in North Korea slip by with a sigh. Israel, alone, gets the spotlight. The theater is absurd, but the script is deadly serious: repeat the charge often enough and the audience will forget who wrote it.

Welcome to the UN’s institutionalized assembly line. Bias here is not an accident to be corrected; it is the operating system. A permanent agenda item exists to single out Israel at every Human Rights Council meeting. Committees stacked with dictatorships write “findings” about the Middle East’s only liberal democracy. Agencies meant for refugees morph into political instruments. Year after year, the belt moves: accusations go in, condemnations come out, press releases fly, and headlines harden into “common sense.”

Let’s pull back the curtain. We will watch how law becomes lawfare, how commissions of inquiry echo NGO talking points, and how the worst regimes on earth launder their own crimes by denouncing the Jewish state. We will map the path by which slogans—“apartheid,” “colonialism,” “genocide”—are stamped with a UN seal and shipped worldwide as if they were facts. The UN is not neutral ground on Israel. It is a battlefield where procedure is the weapon and repetition the artillery. The goal is simple: drag the Jewish state through mud until the mud looks like truth.

Built-In Bias

Walk into a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva and the bias is visible before a word is spoken. Among global themes like women’s rights or disability inclusion sits one permanent agenda item devoted to a single country: Israel. No other nation—not Iran, not North Korea, not China—has its own standing slot. Every regular session features “Agenda Item 7,” a guaranteed time to condemn the world’s only Jewish state. Facts are optional. The machinery will run either way.

This was no bureaucratic mistake. Item 7 was the price demanded by Arab states and their allies when the Council was created in 2006.

Even UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called it “an historic anomaly.” Western democracies have tried to scrap it. Britain, Germany, Australia, and others have all denounced it as a stain on the Council’s credibility. Yet it survives, carved into the agenda like scripture.

The effect is automatic vilification. Each session contains the familiar ritual: a parade of autocrats and activists reciting a litany of Israel’s supposed crimes. Hamas may be firing rockets at civilians, or Syria may be gassing its own people; it doesn’t matter.

The Council will dutifully adopt its pre-written condemnations. The very existence of a permanent agenda item gives the farce a veneer of legitimacy. To the casual observer, it appears that Israel must be uniquely monstrous—after all, no one else earns their own line on the docket. That illusion is the point.

Item 7 is only the most blatant symptom. Since its founding, the Council has convened dozens of special emergency sessions on world crises. Nearly a third of them have focused on Israel. Not Syria. Not Myanmar. Israel! A Martian watching Earth through UN broadcasts could be forgiven for thinking that a small democracy of nine million people is the planet’s chief violator of human rights. The inversion is that complete.

Meanwhile, the same body welcomes serial abusers into leadership roles. In 2003, Qaddafi’s Libya chaired the old Human Rights Commission. In 2015, Saudi Arabia—a monarchy that flogs dissidents, beheads minors, and chops up journalists in Western countries—was appointed to head a panel selecting human rights experts. In 2018, Syria, fresh from gassing its citizens, won a seat on a UN disarmament forum. In 2023, Iran, even as it executed protesters, joined UN women’s rights committees.

These absurdities would be comic if they weren’t so corrosive. The foxes don’t just guard the henhouse—they run the ethics committee.

For Israel, this isn’t occasional unfairness; it’s the daily weather. Every session, every debate, begins preloaded with condemnation. Even when Israel delivers disaster relief abroad or rescues refugees from its enemies’ wars, the script does not change. As one Israeli diplomat joked, if the General Assembly could find the votes, it would accuse the Jews of causing climate change. I’d laugh if I didn’t think it plausible to read that headline in the New York Times. Diabolical.

This is the real climate: a system designed to isolate the lone Jewish democracy, to turn repetition into reality. The libels—apartheid, colonialism, genocide—don’t gain global traction by accident. The UN gives them a platform, a vote tally, and a press release. Bias becomes procedure. Procedure becomes “international consensus.” And that consensus is the engine driving the war of words that seeks to dismantle Israel itself.

A Flood of Resolutions

The conveyor belt runs from Geneva to New York. The Human Rights Council warms up the chorus; the General Assembly belts the finale. With 193 votes to marshal, Israel-bashing becomes an annual sport. A blizzard of texts falls from the rafters. Each one lands with the same thud: condemn, deplore, demand. Truth is the first casualty. Repetition is the weapon.

The arithmetic gives the game away. Between 2015 and 2023 the General Assembly adopted well over a hundred resolutions against Israel and only a few dozen on every other country combined. One small democracy was singled out more than all tyrannies together. North Korea, Iran, Syria, Myanmar, Venezuela—serial abusers with mass graves and torture cells—barely register next to apartments in Judea or a checkpoint that stopped a bomber.

Take a single session. Fifteen separate resolutions on Israel. Five or six for the rest of the world. Not because the world enjoyed peace elsewhere. Because blocs hostile to Israel flood the docket by design. The language is ritual. “Israeli practices affecting the human rights of the Palestinian people.” “The occupied Syrian Golan.” “Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.” Context is stripped out. Terrorism vanishes. History disappears. The text reads like a press release from Ramallah wearing a UN masthead.

Chapter 6: The Genocide Libel

On October 7, Hamas gunmen crossed the border and carried out the deadliest single day of anti-Jewish violence since the Shoah. They murdered about 1,200 people. Babies in cribs. Parents in kitchens. Young people at a music festival. They raped. They burned. They kidnapped hundreds more. While the injured were still making their way to hospitals and families were still identifying bodies, crowds in Western capitals accused Israel of “genocide.” Some waved the flag of the group that had just staged a pogrom and chanted that the Jewish state was exterminating an innocent population.

A people still burying its dead was libeled as the world’s new Nazis. The indecency speaks for itself.

The word genocide has a precise meaning. Raphael Lemkin, a Polish Jew who fled the Nazis, coined it in 1944. The United Nations then codified it in the 1948 Convention.

Genocide is not any mass killing. It is certain acts (including killing and causing serious harm) committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Intent to destroy is the hinge. History shows what that looks like.

The Nazis sought the eradication of the Jews of Europe. Hutu extremists in Rwanda hunted Tutsi civilians with the stated goal of eliminating them. The rulers of the Ottoman Empire drove Armenians to death in marches and massacres. Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge tried to wipe out entire social categories. In each case the aim was explicit: erase a people.

Accusing Israel of genocide empties the term of meaning. War is brutal. Civilians are tragically killed. That is not what makes genocide. Genocide is a program to eliminate a people as such. If a high death toll alone defined genocide, the Allied bombing of German and Japanese cities in World War II would qualify. No serious historian says that because the aim there was to win a war, not to destroy Germans or Japanese as a people.

Israel’s aim is not destruction of a people. It is defense of its citizens against a movement that says out loud that all Jews should die—and that’s not even getting into their stated intent to literally annihilate the rest of the West.

Hamas declares it in charters and broadcasts. Its fighters enact it in massacres. Israel fights to stop that menace and to free hostages. That matters. Intent matters. Law says so. History says so. So does simple moral sense.

The propaganda relies on blur. Turn any tragedy into “Auschwitz.” Treat any strike as “extermination.” Ignore the difference between a military target and a family deliberately shot in its beds. Ignore Hamas embedding launchers among homes and hospitals, then marketing the consequences for Western screens. Pretend that a state warning civilians to evacuate is the same as a regime herding civilians to pits. It is a lie dressed up as empathy.

Jews do not need lectures on genocide. The word came from our experience. The lesson we took from it was not license to kill. It was the duty to live and to protect life. That is why the accusation is not only false. It is perverse. It tries to turn the one Jewish state into the very thing it exists to prevent.

The “Genocide” Lie and the Numbers Game

Every propaganda campaign needs data—or something that looks like it. The genocide libel leans on body counts, chanted like scripture at rallies and printed uncritically in Western headlines. “Thousands dead.” “Mostly women and children.” “Proof of genocide.” The figures sound grim, and that is the point. But the numbers are not data. They are weapons.

Chapter 5: Colonialism and the Great Erasure

In January 2018, Mahmoud Abbas stood before an applauding audience in Ramallah and declared that Israel “is a colonial project that has nothing to do with Judaism.” The line was not new. It was the same slogan polished for diplomats and activists: that the Jewish state is an alien implant, a European fraud imposed on Arab land. The United Nations repeats it in its resolutions. Western academics recycle it for applause. On campuses, students chant that Jews are “settlers” and “colonizers,” as if Tel Aviv were a British outpost and Jerusalem a suburb of London. The charge sounds sophisticated, couched in the language of anti-imperialism. In truth, it is historical amnesia posing as virtue.

Colonialism actually has a meaning. It describes a foreign empire conquering and exploiting another people’s land for profit. A distant metropole sends its sons to rule, extract wealth and ship it home.

The British in India fit the definition: an island nation subjugating a subcontinent for its salt, spices, silks and markets.

The French in Algeria did the same, declaring the territory an extension of France while its people were treated as aliens.

The Belgians in the Congo turned the country into a personal plantation and killed millions.

That is colonialism—foreign rule, foreign enrichment, local misery.

Now look at the Jewish return. No emperor sent the Jews. No “Jewish motherland” bankrolled colonies abroad. There was no sovereign state in the land to be conquered—only the decaying Ottoman Empire, then the British Mandate administering territory that had no self-rule of its own.

The Jews who came were not agents of a metropole but refugees of one. They fled Europe’s pogroms and its ghettos.

They were not foreigners to the soil they sought; it was the birthplace of their nation: their prophets, their law, their language. They called it Eretz Yisrael—the Land of Israel—for thousands of years.

As legal scholar Ruth Gavison put it plainly, Zionism was never a colonial or imperial venture. It was the restoration of Jewish independence in the only land that had ever been theirs.

There were no British redcoats. No viceroys. No flag of a distant crown. There was a dispersed indigenous people returning home with shovels, prayer books and debt. To call this colonialism turns words into weapons.

Colonialism was Britain ruling India. Zionism was Jews escaping British rule.

Colonialism was France clinging to Algeria. Zionism was Jews fleeing Europe’s empires and exterminators.

Colonialism was the carving up of Africa and the Middle East by outsiders. Zionism was survivors and exiles reviving a neglected land their ancestors had never forgotten.

The early Jewish immigrants did not arrive as conquerors but as refugees. They drained swamps, planted vines, and built schools in Hebrew—not in the languages of colonialism: English, French, or Arabic. They imported no foreign culture and served no foreign master. They enriched the land and, with it, their Arab neighbors.

The Yishuv—the pre-state Jewish community—was a society of self-rule, self-labor, and self-defense, not an outpost of empire.

Labeling Israel “colonial” is the great erasure. It strips Jews of their indigeneity and repaints their homecoming as an invasion. It denies the simplest fact in the historical record: the people of Judea came back to Judea. And like the apartheid smear before it, the colonialism libel survives not because it is true, but because it is useful.

Indigenous, Not Imperialists

Jews are indigenous to the Land of Israel. That is not a slogan. It is the record—inscriptions, prayers, coins, chronicles by neighbors who met the Jews there and wrote it down. “Judea,” the hill country at the core of the land, gives the world the word “Jew.” To claim Jews are foreign to Judea is the kind of doublespeak that should make any honest historian wince.

It didn’t start with genocide though. It began, in South Africa of all places, with the repurposing of apartheid, one of the great moral crimes of the 20th Century. As with genocide, converted into a weapon of antisemitism by the evil and the ignorant, apartheid was ripped from the memory of South Africa’s oppressed black majority and converted into the latest verbal pogrom.

The genealogy of language inversion from apartheid to genocide via ethnic cleansing and colonialism has been swift and painful. It is delegitimising the Jewish people as we speak and the true import of the Holocaust has already been forgotten.

In this much needed restatement of fact, Uri forensically lays out the evidence, starting with definition of apartheid in its South African crib and overlaying it with the multicultural reality of modern Israel. The case is clear, compelling…and obvious. Unfortunately, as with genocide, evidence is a post-truth irrelevance to those that who traffic in antisemitism.

Chapter 4: Apartheid as Propaganda

Apartheid. The word itself is a curse in the political lexicon. It conjures passbooks, police raids, and the sound of bulldozers flattening black neighborhoods in South Africa. It meant benches labeled Whites Only and families dragged from homes they built because a white government wanted the land. Apartheid was not a vague prejudice. It was a system of law built on race, enforced by violence, and proud of both.

Under that regime, every South African carried a racial ID card—white, black, “Coloured,” or Asian—and that card decided where you could live, whom you could marry, and what rights you could never have. The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act of 1949 criminalized marriage across racial lines. The Group Areas Act of 1950 herded non-whites out of cities and into barren “homelands,” leaving the white minority, just one-fifth of the population, in control of nearly all the land and all the power.

Black South Africans could not vote in national elections, could not hold office, and could not live in “white” zones except as servants. Apartheid was state-mandated racial supremacy. It declared one group master and the rest permanent subordinates.

Now, keep that system in mind and look at the accusation flung at Israel today. “Israel is an apartheid state,” the slogan goes—chanted on campuses, printed on placards, and repeated in glossy reports by NGOs that long ago traded credibility for applause.

“Apartheid” functions as political shorthand for absolute evil, the one accusation that cancels dialogue. Call Israel an apartheid state and you need no evidence, no argument, no context. You have pronounced the moral death sentence.

That is why the word is used. It collapses history into propaganda. The people chanting it could not tell you what South African apartheid actually was, or what Israeli law actually says. They do not have to. The label does the work. It transforms a Jewish democracy into a colonial caricature and its citizens into villains unworthy of defense. It is not a charge that invites scrutiny. It is a weapon designed to shame and silence.

The claim that Israel practices apartheid fails every test—legal, factual, and moral. What it reveals, instead, is how language itself has become a battlefield, where the old war against Jewish existence now marches under the banner of “human rights.” The apartheid slur endures for one reason: not because it is true, but because it is useful.

Israel’s Reality of Equal Citizenship

Start with the country as it is, not as a chant imagines it. Inside Israel’s sovereign borders, citizens share the same civil and political rights in law and in practice. Arab citizens vote in every national election. They serve in the Knesset, lead parties, chair committees, and argue bills on the same floor as Jewish legislators. Israel has appointed Christian Arab ambassadors abroad; George Deek’s posting to Azerbaijan is one example. Another, Christian Arab jurist, Salim Joubran of Haifa, sat on the Supreme Court and chaired the Central Elections Committee—he literally ran the national vote. Under real apartheid that sentence would be a punch line. In Israel, it is just business as usual.

Equality is written into the state’s founding promise and carried forward in the Basic Laws that protect human dignity and liberty. Courts read those guarantees broadly. Citizens use them daily. Arab mayors run Arab towns. Arab lawyers argue before Jewish and Arab judges. Arab and Druze officers command Jewish soldiers. In 2021 Mansour Abbas and the Ra’am party signed a coalition deal and became indispensable to forming a government. He negotiated budgets and delivered billions for Arab municipalities. That is democratic power, not apartheid.

Chapter 3: By Right, Not Permission

Israel exists by right, not indulgence. That truth was spoken aloud in Tel Aviv on a Friday afternoon in May 1948 when David Ben-Gurion read the Declaration of Independence. The text invoked an ancient bond and a modern promise and affirmed “the natural right of the Jewish People to be masters of their own fate, like all other nations, in their own sovereign State.” Ben-Gurion did not ask for a favor. He exercised a right that history sustained and law affirmed. In that moment, the Jewish nation reentered the family of nations by justice, not sufferance.

Of course, self-determination did not begin as a Jewish claim. It entered modern statecraft after the First World War and hardened into global doctrine after the Second. The League of Nations spoke of preparing peoples for independence out of collapsed empires. The United Nations Charter then put “equal rights and self-determination of peoples” among its core purposes in Article 1 and tied peace itself to that respect in Article 55. In plain language, a people has the right to shape its political life. Poles claimed it. Czechs claimed it. Arabs claimed it. Jews, rightly, claimed it too.

The Jewish People qualify in every serious sense. A shared origin in the Land of Israel. A language revived in daily use. A continuous culture, law and memory. A recorded, uninterrupted bond to a specific place. The League of Nations said so in 1922 when it recognized “the historical connection of the Jewish People with Palestine” and the “grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country.” That sentence was not a Shabbat poem. It was the preamble of the Mandate for Palestine, an instrument of international law.

The record also answers a favorite anti-Israel trope, the one that paints Israel as a guilt project or colonial indulgence. When the Ottoman Empire fell, Arab leaders pressed for independence and received new states in Syria, Iraq and the Arabian Peninsula.

No one at San Remo in 1920 thought it outlandish that the Jews should seek the same right in their homeland. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 voiced British support for a Jewish national home. San Remo gave that policy international force.

The League’s Mandate charged Britain (even though they abandoned their responsibility when the winds at home shifted) with facilitating that national home while safeguarding the civil and religious rights of others. Read the text. The assignment is explicit. The point of the Mandate was to realize Jewish self-determination in that land.

Nothing in the League or early UN archives suggests that Jews were anything less than a people entitled to sovereignty. There is plenty of debate over lines on maps and the timing of institutions, but there is no serious claim that Jews were a mere religious interest group waiting on imperial charity. The framework was self-determination. The expectation was statehood.

When the United Nations assumed the question in 1947, it did so with two realities in view. First, the Charter’s promise of self-determination. Second, the facts on the ground: a Jewish national society already functioning with towns, councils, schools and defense.

The UN Special Committee visited the land - and displaced-persons camps in Europe - and concluded that two peoples claimed the territory. The General Assembly then recommended partition in Resolution 181. The vote was 33 in favor, 13 against, 10 abstaining. The resolution spoke of creating “independent Arab and Jewish States.” The word independent matters. It recognized a Jewish claim equal to the Arab claim under the Charter’s own logic.

Yes, the General Assembly could recommend and not command, but that does not gut the principle. The nations acknowledged that the Jews of Palestine were a people with the right to statehood. The Zionist leadership accepted the plan, with all its painful sacrifices. The Arab League rejected it and promised war. That choice tells you everything you need to know about the later rhetoric. When “Pro-Palestinian” spokesmen chant about illegitimacy, they are not debating law. They are denying a people’s right to be.

Statehood by Right, Not by Permission

On May 14, 1948, the Jews of the land declared the State of Israel. They timed it to the hour the British Mandate ended so there would be no gap in lawful authority. The Declaration cited the UN’s partition recommendation and the League Mandate’s recognition of the Jewish bond to the land, but its core claim ran deeper. It affirmed the natural and historic right of the Jewish People to sovereignty in their own country. That is the grammar of nationhood everywhere. Rights first. Recognition follows.

Part One: Setting the Record Straight

Chapter 1: Indigenous Continuity

A small silver coin tells the story better than any speech. Minted by Jewish rebels in 67 CE, the first year of the Great Revolt, it surfaced in a Judean desert cave in 2023. One side bears the ancient Hebrew words Yerushalayim HaKdosha—“The Holy Jerusalem”—framed by pomegranates. The other shows a chalice and the date. Empires came and went. The coin waited. Its message is still clear: the people smeared today as “settlers” are the ones who named this land.

Jews did not start counting history in 1948. For three millennia Jews called this land home, prayed toward it, and came back to it whenever allowed. “Next year in Jerusalem” outlasted Rome, the caliphates and Britain. A people cannot colonize its own house.

The story begins with a promise. In Genesis, God tells Abram to go to a land that will be shown to him, and then assigns it to his offspring. The pledge repeats to Isaac and Jacob, who is renamed Israel. Rather than legend, it is the People’s title and task, carried as memory and law from the start.

By around 1000 BCE the promise had a capital. David made Jerusalem his city and brought the Ark there. Solomon raised the First Temple on its mount. These are not abstractions—the City of David is a place you can walk. Stones from those layers still surface as the city builds and rebuilds. Faith and history share the same coordinates here.

Belonging, not power, was the only point. When Babylon destroyed the First Temple in 586 BCE and deported elites, Jews rebuilt by 515 BCE. Ezra and Nehemiah record the work.

Ezekiel and Jeremiah spoke of gathering the people back to their land as certainty, not poetry. The bond carried obligations and warnings, but the promise did not expire. Psalm 137 was not a metaphor, it was a policy for the soul: do not forget Jerusalem.

The ground keeps talking. Pottery with Hebrew inscriptions. Mikva’ot chiseled into rock. Synagogue mosaics. In Jerusalem, crews still hit Second Temple stones when they pour new foundations. The Siloam Tunnel cut by Hezekiah still brings water downhill, and the ancient Hebrew inscription describing its completion was found on its wall. A seventh-century BCE bulla bearing a Judean name close to one in Jeremiah surfaced near the same area. These are proof points, not souvenirs.

Coins speak plainly. During the Maccabean revolt, Jews struck their own money. During the Great Revolt, they stamped “Freedom of Israel” in Hebrew. During the Bar Kochba revolt, they overstruck Roman coins and printed “for the freedom of Jerusalem” with the Temple facade. Archaeologists have found these across Judea and Samaria. Though the rebels died, their words in metal did not.

Jewish life regrouped in the north after Rome’s wars. Galilean sites show synagogues with Hebrew inscriptions and Temple imagery from late antiquity. The Jerusalem Talmud preserves debates rooted in that landscape. Sources suggest Jews still formed a majority in parts of the land into the fourth century, before imperial Christianity tilted demography. Moshe Gil argues Jews may have remained the majority until the Arab conquest centuries later. Majority or not, the continuity of presence is obvious and stubborn.

Pick any century. You will find Jews somewhere in the Land of Israel. Coins, seals, prayers, and deeds line up. The land has always been the cradle of the Jewish People. And the cradle has never been empty.

Dispersion Without Disconnection

Rome tried to erase both name and nation. After crushing the Bar Kochba revolt in 135 CE, Hadrian folded Judea into “Syria Palaestina” to sever Jews from their land. Many were killed, expelled, or sold. Jews still remained in the Galilee and the Judean hills. Those driven out carried Zion with them. The empire redrew the map. It did not rewrite the people.

Antisemitism never retires. It molts. It learns the moral language of each age and puts it on like a borrowed suit. In the Middle Ages it preached as theology. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it paraded as science and race. Today it speaks in the idiom of human rights and decolonization. The claim does not change. Jews are cast as a malignant force and Israel as the crime scene. The lie returns as virtue.

Medieval Europe had the blood libel. Jews were accused of murdering children for ritual. They were blamed for poisoning wells and for killing God.

When nationalism rose, the target shifted from faith to loyalty. Jews were smeared as a fifth column. The Dreyfus affair in France proved how far a modern state could go to brand a Jew a traitor.

The Nazis industrialized the lie. In their propaganda, Jews were both Bolsheviks and banksters. Paradox was no obstacle.

After 1945, overt Jew-hatred became unfashionable in polite company. It did not vanish. It migrated.

In 1975 the U.N. General Assembly declared that Zionism is racism. The vote said more about the Cold War bloc math than about reality, but the damage stuck. In 1991 the Assembly rescinded the line, but the stigma outlived the text. In 2001, at the U.N.’s Durban conference against racism, the NGO forum revived it with pamphlets, street theater, and the recycled Protocols. Israel was branded the world’s racial villain. The haters learned that if you wrap the oldest bigotry in the newest slogans, you can sell it as progress.

The glossary now is familiar. Apartheid. Colonizer. Genocide. The accusation is updated. The premise is identical. Jews are villains for surviving. The Jewish state is the most convenient stage on which to rerun the play.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks described antisemitism as a virus. In one era it infects theology. In another, biology. Today, he warned, it hijacks the language of human rights to deny the Jewish People the one right it insists on for everyone else: self-determination.

When you hear human rights invoked to argue that the one Jewish state is illegitimate as such, you are hearing the old hatred in its newest clothes.

Even medieval fantasy returns. The blood libel reappears as the claim that Israel deliberately targets children or seeks extermination.

Dual loyalty resurfaces as whispers about “the lobby” and about Jews controlling policy. The far right and the far left both find ways to paint Jews as power incarnate.

On the activist left, Jews are recoded as “white” and Israel as white supremacy with Hebrew signage. The same old caricature is now graded and assigned in seminar rooms.

The intent has not changed. Strip the rhetoric and you find the same project: isolate the Jews, blame the Jews, and punish the Jews for existing.

Why now? The West helped invite the lie back in.

After the Cold War, many taught themselves that history had ended. Peace was the default. Progress was automatic. Nationhood was suspect. Strength was vulgar.

The hard lessons of the twentieth century—call evil what it is, keep your powder dry—were filed away as antique. Relativism seeped into institutions that once guarded judgment. Moral confidence eroded.

Movements skilled at moral theater filled the vacuum. Islamists learned to translate their aims into the West’s vocabulary. Postcolonial theory offered a ready-made script: divide the world into oppressors and oppressed; distrust facts as masks for power; elevate narrative over record. In that framework, Israel—the most successful anticolonial project in history—became the archetype of the colonialist. Its enemies, even when they boasted of extermination, were draped in the romance of resistance.

You saw it in the reactions after October 7, 2023. As Israelis were still burying their dead, a chorus explained that the massacre “did not happen in a vacuum.” The words, perhaps meant to signal sophistication, landed as excuse.

In the weeks that followed, a U.N. emergency session passed a ceasefire resolution that named Israel and never mentioned Hamas. On a campus green, more than thirty student groups at Harvard signed a letter holding Israel “entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.”

In each case, barbarism was rationalized by theory. The line between victim and murderer blurred into a cloud of context. A civilization that once unified to defeat fascism now struggles to name it when it wears a keffiyeh.

This lie metastasizes because institutions amplify it until it sounds like consensus.

At the U.N., Israel is a standing case. The Human Rights Council keeps a permanent agenda item just for condemning one country. The General Assembly churns out more resolutions targeting Israel than all other states combined. Durban’s template lives on: NGOs write reports, U.N. bodies cite them as if they were scripture, and headlines turn accusations into verdicts before facts are tested. “Apartheid” and “genocide” jump from a press release to chyrons in hours. Repetition does the rest.

Social media supercharges the cycle. A baseless claim can be viewed by millions before a correction is drafted. Visuals do the heavy lifting. A caption supplies the indictment. The algorithm rewards outrage, not accuracy. By the time a retraction appears, the myth has hardened into memory.

Universities, which should be immune systems for bad ideas, became incubators. Departments steeped in postcolonial theory recoded Jews from indigenous people to settlers. DEI bureaucracies built hierarchies of innocence in which Jews, now labeled “white,” default as oppressors. Student organizations took direction from national networks. Graphics, chants, and “day of resistance” toolkits spread with factory precision. Administrators hid behind neutrality while one side monopolized the megaphone. Graduates carried the catechism to NGOs, newsrooms, and international agencies. Quad slogans became policy briefs.

The method is simple. Repeat the charge everywhere. Drown dissent. Stamp it with an institutional logo. Turn volume into “consensus.” Watch decent people, numbed by the noise, start to nod along. Common, to be clear, does not mean true.

This book is not a plea for indulgence. In it, we will dismantle the lies. We will show an unbroken tie between a people and its land.
